Having just returned from a year in the San Francisco Bay Area, we discovered KCSM, the local jazz station which we can access via the internet. So a typical evening for us is to listen to some jazz while we sip some wine during portions of the Jazz Oasis show from 6 to 9 p.m. I call it “research.” 🙂
Here’s a song that stood out for me the other night – Born to Be Blue, sung by Helen Merrill.
The main characters in my novels often long to sing and when I wrote Real Women Sing the Blues, well, that was the impetus for me to sing/write my own blues, jazz tunes. (I’m seriously considering rereleasing this as Chasing Moondoggie because I’m not sure that readers are really into the blues.)
Anyway, as writers often report their word count, I guess I’ll report my songwriting progress. This morning while dh drove to work, which is a 15-minute drive, I wrote a song. I was reading my morning devotion and an idea struck me and the next thing I knew, I’d written the lyrics to a song and even have a melody in mind.
Okay, it’s not polished, but it’s something to work with and could be the basis for this week’s songwriting class homework. I’m excited to work on it.
